Band 7+: Some people believe that university education should be free, while others argue that students should pay for their own education. Discuss both views and state your own opinion.

It is true that students are charged for studying at universities. While some people tend toward the viewpoint that it should be free of charge, I would have to support the idea that university education should not be free because there are many side effects of that action.

On the one hand, there are some benefits that free university education can offer to society and especially students. One of the main advantages is that it increases access and equality. This means that it gives opportunities to students who are from financially poor families or backgrounds to pursue higher education. This, as a result, produces well-rounded workers for companies, increasing their overall reputation—employability and academic reputation—among other universities. Another reason is that by completely reducing tuition fees, students can graduate without the burden of paying contact fees, permitting them to begin their careers without financial barriers.

On the other hand, I agree with the viewpoint that free university education can be burdensome. Firstly, I believe that it requires substantial amounts of money, which can be a problem for universities. This is because universities should pay their employees—teachers, professors, and others—for their work, and in order to keep them, they should make money from their students. Secondly, I also feel that there would be a decline in the quality of education as more people enroll in them. For example, if there are around 40 students in one class, one teacher cannot handle such amount of students, let alone give each of them feedback for their work. Lastly, when education is free, some students may disregard the value of education as they do not pay for it, and they become fucking careless about their grades, courses, and classes.

To sum up, it seems to me that there are more disadvantages to free university education than its merits. While it provides some benefits—increased access and equality and eliminated student debt—it creates problems—the economic burden on universities, reduced appreciation toward education, and a decline in education quality—for universities.
