Band 7+: Some people believe that university education should be free for everyone, while others think that students should pay for their higher studies. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

University has always represented the pinnacle of higher education and holds strong sentiment for the nation’s pedagogy system. While some argue that it shall be free as a human right, some believe that, given its reputation, it warrants a monetary contribution. This essay will examine both opinions in order to synthesize a conclusion in addition to my opinion.

With regards to the arguments for no cost to be incured, the institution has been the best example of how a free education policy can be demonstrated. This policy is fundamental and builds trust among the people; everyone should have freedom in accessing teaching. Although universities operate with higher costs nowadays, the exemption of fees signals the executive’s commitment to these initiatives, thus giving more opportunities to scholars. For example, underprivileged students with low socioeconomic backgrounds can have the same merits as other scholars in pursuing expensive courses, i.e., medical and engineering.

On the other hand, the cost will burden universities as market demands increase; increasing numbers of enrollments and new courses require substantial investment, which can only be sustainable with scholar contributions. For instance, graduating a medical student requires $1 million per person. Thus, it requires a substantial budget to subsidize universities, especially public institutions.

In my opinion, I strongly believe that free teaching for the target population—i.e., underprivileged students—should be the priority. It is crucial to strike a balance between government policy and student contribution to curb deficits. Nevertheless, the cost borne by students should be minimal and should not have a harmful impact on their future debt, especially for those who will be taking out student loans. A universal free education will not only cause a financial burden but might also open the system to potential abuse—i.e., by those with high incomes. I also suggest that the government improve the guidelines for public and private university fees so that there is no gap in affordability.

In conclusion, I strongly support free teaching in universities, but it must be implemented carefully to benefit the scholars who truly need it and not to burden the government. Although education is a human right, it still requires hefty costs, and without suitable policies and regulations, it can collapse and diminish future students’ opportunities.
