University always reprented the pinnacles of higher education and holds strong sentiment for nation’s education system. While some argue university should be free as one of the ‘human rights’, some believe that with its reputations, it warrants monetary contribution. This essay will examine both opinion in order to synthesize conclusion in addition to my opinion.
With regards to the free university education arguments, university has been the best example how free education policy can be demonstrated. This policy is fundamental and builds trust to the peoples and everyone should have a freedom in accessing higher education. Although university operates with higher cost nowadays, the exemption of fee signals the commitment of government towards the initiatives thus giving more opportunity for students. For example, under privilege student with low socioeconomic background having the same merits with other students in pursuing expensive courses i.e. medical and engineering.
On other other hand, the cost will burden university as the markets demands i.e. incresing numbers of enrolements and new courses require substantial investment which can only be sustainable with students contribution. For an instance, graduating medical student will require 1 million dollar per person. Thus, it required subtantial budget from the goverment to subsidized universities espcially the public institutions.
In my opinion, i strongly believe that free education for target population i.e. those underprivilege students should be the go-to. It is crucial to strike the balance in between government policy and student contribution to curb the deficits. Nevertheless, the cost bared by student should be minimal and not giving harmful impact to their future debt especially to those who will taking the student loans. Universal free education policy will not only causing financial burden but might opens for potential abused to the system i.e. those with high income group. I also suggest the government to improve the guidelines for public and private universities fee so that there will be no gap in affordabilty.
As conclusion, i strongly support the free education in university but has to be implemented carefully to benefits the students who really needed it and not to burden the government. Although education is a human right, it still required hefty cost and without suitable policies and regulations, it can collapse and demised the future students opportunity.
