Band 8+: Some people believe that using smartphones makes people less social. Others think that smartphones help people communicate more effectively. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some individuals believe that the overuse of technological devices, such as mobile phones, by adolescents negatively affects their soft skills. Although this tendency may harm communication abilities, it can also contribute to the expansion of their social networks.

On the one hand, the younger generation faces several problems related to interpersonal skills such as face-to-face communication due to excessive use of technological tools. The majority of teenagers prefer texting, scrolling or sending voice messages instead of engaging in offline conversations. This trend increases social anxiety, as many adolescents lack experience with eye contact, tone control, body language and spontaneous speaking. As a result, offline interaction becomes uncomfortable for them because direct communication does not provide time to think before responding. Consequently, young people continue to rely heavily on smartphones, which reduces real-life interaction. For instance, some research indicates that adolescents who spend more than 3-4 hours a day on their phones struggle to maintain conversations in social settings.

On the other hand, technology enables young people to communicate globally through online communities or professional forums. Instead of avoiding communication entirely, they can develop new forms of social skills that are necessary in the digital age. Social platforms give them opportunities to express themselves and interact with a worldwide audience, which can positively influence their real-life communication skills. For example, in the digital era, remote jobs and online projects create chances for young individuals to improve their socialisation, which is essential both personally and professionally.

In conclusion, although excessive mobile phone use may negatively affect adolescents’ soft skills, it also contributes to broader networking opportunities and the development of new communication skills.
