People’s opinions differ on whether tourists should follow country’s local customs and behaviours. Some supporters advocate that visitors must follow the rules of countries, while some argue that everyone should have their own freedom. I personally believe that host country should welcome cultural differences and embrace the diversity.
On the one hand, there are several reasons why visitors should comply with the habits and customs of the host country. Firstly, it effectively reduces the number of conflicts among different cultures and creates a hormonie environment. If tourists do not understand the customs, behaviours, or regulations of a country beforehand, it might result in misunderstanding or cultural dispute. For instance, a Taiwanese report indicates that the main reason of international conflicts happened in Taiwanese attraction is due to the fact that visitors did not follow the local behaviours or did something rude to the local customs. Moreover, following the customs and habits of the host country reflects respect for the host country and allows local people to treat tourists more sincerely and seriously.
On the other hand, in spite of the above arguments, I personally agree with that host country should treat tourists as their respectful guests, and welcome different culture. Firstly, compared to asking them obey the habits or behaviours of different country, it might be more free and comfortable for them to have fun without limitations. For example, according to a Taiwanese social media survey, more than half of tourists tend to choose countries where there are not many restrictions to travel, and their main concern is that they regard personal happiness as the most important thing. Additionally, countries should focus on embracing cultural diversity, making more visitors have higher intention to come back again and boost their economy in tourism industry.
In conclusion, although asking visitors follow countries’ customs and behaviours has some valid advantages such as protecting local people and reducing disputes, however, I believe that host country should welcome cultural differences to make the whole tourism industry more popular and sustainable.
