There is a debate over whether watching television is harmful or beneficial for children. While some argue that watching TV programs can be beneficial for children, I agree with those who believe that it is detrimental to them.
The main reason why people think children’s TV viewing can have a positive effect is on their imagination and learning skills. This can be explained by a whole host of factors. The main one is that TV programs, and especially cartoons, include several images, colors, and multiple characters which can enhance their brain development and, in turn, help them gain basic concepts about the world. Another factor is that there is a lot of data and there are many lessons which they can learn while watching educational programs. For example, children can learn about animals (such as their body color, size, etc.) by watching nature or wildlife documentaries. Hence, they can learn about the world and other things without any effort.
This notwithstanding, I believe watching TV is more likely to be harmful for children due to two main causes. When children watch TV, they can easily lose track of time and spend several hours in front of the screen. Consequently, this excessive watching can lead to a lack of physical activity. They spend more time watching television instead of playing outdoor games, which help their physiological and social development. As a result, they can suffer from obesity or other diseases. The second reason is that spending a long time in front of screens can reduce children’s concentration and the time they have for other beneficial activities. When children spend several hours watching TV, they may become less focused on activities that require active thinking, such as reading or studying. As a result, their academic performance may decline. For example, a child who spends most of their time watching TV may have less time and energy to complete homework.
To sum up, although watching television can be beneficial in some ways, such as improving imagination and broadening horizons, I believe the negative impacts, such as a lack of physical activity and inhibited social and physical development, outweigh these benefits.
