It is believed by some individuals that plastic items should be replaced by more eco-friendly materials such as glass. I completely agree with this statement because plastic products affect the food-chains of living organisms and lead to serious environmental problems. In this essay, I will explain the reasons for my view, followed by logical examples.
To begin with, plastic material affects the food-webs of human beings as well as animals. Besides, plastics are non-biodegradable, so they takes million of years to decompose. In some cases, it is broken down into small pieces called microplastics. Consequently, these micro-particles enter into the plants’ life-cycle because of some chemical processes in the soil. Furthermore, some plants are grazed by animals and also used by human beings. As a result, these harmful substances enter the bodies of other organisms. In this way, this interferes with the food-chains and sometimes prove fatal.
In addition, the production, use and decomposition of plastic materials cause environmental problems. Firstly, the materials that are used to manufacture plastic release carbon dioxide. Moreover, the use and the decomposition of plastics produce carbon dioxide as well as methane and other gases. As a result, all these gases are reasons of major environmental issues such as global warming. Besides, global warming causes change in weather patterns and also affects the living standards on Earth. For example, research in Antarctica showed that global warming causes skin cancer and eye problems in the local inhabitants. In this way, it is demonstrated that how plastic pollution influences the surroundings.
It is argued by some people that plastics should be replaced by other materials such as glass. Glass is an excellent option for storing food, drinks and medicines because it does not react chemically with other substances. Furthermore, it undergoes the process of recycling and can be used again and again. Therefore, it is an environmentally-friendly product.
Taking everything into consideration, I believe that global warming affects not only the lives of organisms but also the enviornment. Therefore, it should be replaced by some environmentally-friendly materials.
