It is argued that the most important consideration when designing a building should be its function, rather than its outward appearance. While acknowledging the reasons for this prospal, I partly agree with it for several reasons.
On the one hand, there are many compelling reasons for why people agree that the crucial thing when designing a building is the operation rather than the exterior. Firstly, the function is the core purpose of the building. To be specific, when building a house the owner needs to focus more on the function rooms and equipment, it would effectively serve the needs of its users and fulfill its intended purpose which might lead to the productivity and performance of patrons. For example, if the owners design their house in a cold climate region, they should consider the good heating and ventilation system that would help them to stabilize the temperature. Secondly, good function is also a way to save money. In fact, while living in areas affected by extreme weather events, the house would need the best functional weatherproofing which may reduce the repairing cost for patrons. For instance, in Japan the construction is determined by three major designs, concerning rubber layer and seismic isolator.
On the other hand, it is understandable why people believe that the outward appearance holds a more significant role in designing buildings than the function. An epic look can also add value and attraction to the building. To be particular, while the supermarket and outdoor market have the same operation, people tend to get to the shopping mall due to its enchanting and professional appearance which help them to lure more customers, especially the teenagers. For example, if a mall has an impressive, luxurious architecture and interior design, it can attract more customers than a supermarket or flea market, even if they offer similar products and services. Consequently, the exterior appearance of a building can be a significant factor affecting its appeal to customers.
In conclusion, I believe that while the outer appearance is indispensable the interior design should be taken as a priority.
