Nowadays, gender equality is an important issue in education. Some people think universities should take the same number of male and female students in all subjects. However, I completely disagree with this idea because admission should depend on students’ ability and interest, not gender.
First of all, it is not practical to take equal numbers of boys and girls in every subject. Students have different interests, strengths, and career goals, which naturally influence their subject choices. For example, some students may prefer engineering, computer science, or mathematics, while others may choose nursing, education, or business studies. If universities are forced to maintain equal numbers of male and female students in every subject, they will not be able to follow students’ real choices. As a result, the education system may become less flexible and less suitable for students’ needs.
Moreover, university admission should mainly be based on academic results, skills, and talent. If gender is used as a condition for admission, some highly qualified students may lose their opportunity even if they have better marks and abilities. This would not be fair and could also reduce the overall quality of education in universities. Universities need to select the best students to maintain high academic standards, rather than trying to balance the number of male and female students in each subject artificially. Therefore, merit-based admission is more important than gender balance.
In conclusion, I strongly disagree with the idea that universities should accept equal numbers of male and female students in every subject. Instead, universities should focus on students’ ability, interest, and performance rather than gender when making admission decision
