It is widely argued that it is reasonable to utilize animals’ bodies in medical experiments, while others reject this opinion. This essay attempts to shed light on both perspectives before concluding that I am in favor of the former notion.
On the one hand, it is understandable why animal research is cruel and unethical to experiments for human benefit. This is mainly because animals as well as all creatures have their own rights to live, therefore, their lives should be respected. This also means that people have no moral right to use them in our research. Another reason is that laboratory animals often have to be subjected to toxic substances, which causes them pain, distress, and even death. Annually, millions of mice, for example, become deformed or die after being examined for these tests.
On the other hand, there are a host of compelling reasons as to why animal testing plays an essential role in the medical field. Over the past few decades, there have been a number of medical breakthroughs using experimentation, which has saved millions of lives. For instance, according to some surveys, there are a myriad of successful vaccines which are developed using animal testing. In addition, if new drugs are not tested in animals instead of testing on humans first, it could lead to catastrophic consequences. This is because some drugs might contain poison which can lead to human’s lethal. Therefore, it is better and safer to use animals for medical research since human bodies have some neurons or body’s reaction in common with animals. As a result, the best way to use animals for medical experiments.
In conclusion, it is undeniable that using animals in medical research may affect their own rights. I would contend that animal experimentation is essential for scientific progress and the development of new treatments.
