Band 8+: Some people like change, while others prefer stability. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is commonly believed that novelty and progress are preferable to familiarity and consistency. While steadiness has a positive influence on mental health as it contributes to a sense of security, I hold the view that constant evolution is more advantageous, because it serves as a powerful catalyst for self-improvement.

On the one hand, some claim that innovation is better than permanence, since it leads to the development of new skills and a greater understanding of one’s own capabilities. Change forces individuals to adapt and learn new things, pushing them outside their comfort zones and promoting personal growth. For example, pursuing a new hobby could mean a transition that allows for revealing hidden strengths and capabilities. Therefore, I contend that change is absolutely essential for personal growth, because it can lead to remarkable personal transformation that stability may not offer.

On the other hand, many people are convinced that constancy fosters a sense of control and confidence, which boosts one’s emotional state. In today’s fast-paced world, continuous evolution is inevitable, and people suffer from the fear of losing control of their lives. Consequently, stability, particularly in financial situation, accommodation and personal connections, contributes to a sense of security and belonging, reducing anxiety and promoting happiness. To illustrate, if a person does not have a permanent place to live, he will live in a constant state of anxiety, fearing they might be left without shelter at any moment. For this reason, I tend to think that people avoid any changes whenever possible and choose stability.

In conclusion, it is hotly debated whether change is better than constancy. Despite the fact that predictable and stable life cultivates a good psychological condition in the long run, my firm conviction is that embracing transformation fosters personal development by unlocking hidden potential that might not have been apparent in a static environment.
