Band 5+: Some people like to listen to music while working or studying. Others find that they need silence to focus. What is your preference? Why do you find the other option unhelpful?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some individuals believe that listening to music whilst studying or working can enhance productivity. Otherwise, many people argue that it may hinder performance. Personally, I hold the view that it is generally a bad idea.

On the one hand, listening to music while engaging in task can boost concentration and motivation. This is particular true for repetitive task or mundane task, where the background music is needed to create the enjoyable atmosphere and help to reduce the boredom. Furthermore, variety genres of music, such as instrument, classical are thought to improve focus by masking distracting noises and it can enhance one’s mood, potentially improved overall performance.

On the other hand, I contend that listening to music during cognitively demanding tasks may hinder performances. Firstly, music with lyrics can distract people attention, making it difficult to process complex information or solve problems. This is especially in reading, writing analyzing data, where full concentration is necessary. For instance, university students writing essays find it challenging to focus on work while listening to music and ultimately reducing efficiency. Many research show that multitask often result lower quality and increase time spending on tasks. For example, a study from Australia’s University found that the student listening to lyric music got significantly lower score compared to who studied in silence.

In conclusion, although listening to music may offer some benefit but, in my point of view, it is counterproductive when working that6 demand deep concentration.
