Band 7+: Some people prefer to work in the same type of job throughout their lifetime while others like to change the type of job they do. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Many people choose to pursue the same occupation their entire life; however, others are more drawn to the idea of trying different jobs. While both career decisions have equally valid merits, I personally believe people should be open to going into different professions rather than settling to one.

True, lifetime employment proves desirable in many regards. People involved in the same profession tend to enjoy greater stability and thus, reduced work-induced stress. Performing the same set of responsibilities and tasks makes for a predictable routine, which eliminates feelings of uncertainty and anxiety from constantly being exposed to new challenges. Low stress levels, in turn, can be associated with greater job satisfaction. Adhering to a particular career path also allows for job excellence. Undertaking the same tasks related to one’s job results in mastery of this particular job overtime through repetition and growing familiarity. Having developed a mastery of one’s job, people stand better chance of moving up the career ladder.

I, on the other hand, support those who lean towards the idea of becoming involved in different professions over one’s lifetime. This idea seems appealing to them primarily because it helps foster greater adaptability. They presume involvement in different jobs makes them more adaptable seeing as they come in contact with different people and environments, which require one to be willing to change in order to succeed in their job. Being adaptable, they can, in turn, cope well with the changing nature of today’s job market. Not only does trying different jobs nurture adaptability in people, but it also equips them with a diverse range of skills and perspectives. As they are engaged in different occupations, people have an opportunity to acquire new skills and develop a well-rounded worldview having been introduced to other people from varying backgrounds. Having an extensive repertoire of skills and views, as a result, further enhances their employability in the job market.

In conclusion, while having a permanent occupation can lead to job satisfaction and better promotion opportunities, I am still in favor of pursuing different jobs throughout one’s life since it makes for adaptable and well-rounded employees who are better suited to cope with the ever-changing dynamics of today’s job market.
