Band 9: "Some people say discipline is necessary for academic success, while others argue that freedom allows students to develop better. Discuss both views and give your opinion."

Education is often likened to a journey—a gradual unfolding of one’s personal truth. Along this path, educators play a pivotal role, not only by transmitting knowledge but also by offering steady guidance and emotional support. In the earliest stages of life, it is typically our parents—our first teachers—who introduce us to foundational values such as obedience. Though the concept may appear contradictory at first, genuine self-regulation cannot flourish without a framework of discipline. The foundation of our future success is, to a large extent, laid through the cultivation of consistent and purposeful habits.

At a deeper level, the aim of education transcends academic achievement. It strives to nurture within each individual the resilience and integrity necessary to live both freely and responsibly. The word discipline itself is derived from the Latin discĕre, which means “to learn” or “to be taught.” Over time, its meaning broadened to include not only instruction but also the conduct expected as a natural outcome of meaningful learning. Eventually, the term took on connotations of correction—whether moral or physical—but at its heart, discipline remains an internal dedication to reason, purpose, and growth.

A truly disciplined person is one who maintains clarity of purpose, abides by self-imposed standards, and takes deliberate control over the direction of their life. Far from being a tool of suppression, discipline serves as a means of empowerment. It offers the inner structure necessary to exercise authentic freedom.

While freedom is often a subject of philosophical inquiry and political debate, its essence lies in the capacity for self-governance. In the end, the core mission of education is to develop individuals who are not only autonomous but also ethically grounded. It is in this delicate balance between liberty and responsibility that the true value of education is revealed.
