Band 6+: Some people say social media makes us more connected, others argue it makes us more isolated.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Many people believe that social media cuts off individuals, while others claim that it enables people to stay connected. I will discuss both views before representing my personal opinion

On the one hand, spending most time on social media results in sedentary lifestyle. Since people rely on online platforms for pleasure, or even escaping from stress, they would be easily attracted by games and eye-catching videos that prevent them from engaging in social activities. For example, instead of trying physical activities like Basketball or football to connect with others and improve teamwork skills, young people waste their time chasing for vague online friendships that are not stable or secure. As a result, young people tend to lose the meaningful relationships around them. Furthermore, isolation caused by social media among people can also stem from mental issues, which are especially suffered by many young people. As people increasingly face pressure from work, financial burden or family conflicts, they regard social media as a place where they could hide emotions and escape harsh reality. In detail, social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Tiktok play important roles in satisfying their feelings, or helping them start a new relationship with others, while in reality, it is difficult for them to find the one that truly understand and share the same hobbies with them. As a consequent, social media would separate them from face-to-face communication and weaken social bonds they have with others.

On the other hand, social media can be a beneficial tool in fostering the way people stay updated with crucial information. This can be seen in various websites in the Internet ranging from different contents about education, crime, and healthcare. Thanks to its endless sources, people can understand different stories and news that happen around them without worrying that they would miss something. Consequently, they gain enormous knowledge and have chances to witness international events through virtual screen. Moreover, not only does social media motivate the widespread of information, but it also lead to a diversity of a community. By utilizing online apps, people can get access to other profiles that come from different places and backgrounds in order to send message, interact through videos regardless of far distance. For instance, Zalo provide people free videos calling with high speed connection and people could also communicate whenever they want, even their relatives are far from them. Consequently, this means of communication contribute to the solutions for geographical constrains and encourage people to adopt social media as a cost-effective solution.

In conclusion, while social media would isolate people for certain situations, I strongly believe that it would have a positive impact on people’s fast life today. Therefore, the power of social media is based on how we make use of social media correctly in order to facilitate our new ways of communication and encourage a modern lifestyle
