Band 5+: Some people say that advertising encourages us to buy things that we really do not need. Others say that advertisements tell us about new products that may improve our lives. Which viewpoint do you agree with? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There are two opinions about the influence of advertising: some consider that because of marketing people tend to buy useless stuff, but others believe in simplification of human existence due to exploitation of such goods. I am closer to the first viewpoint and in this essay I will argue that such a phenomenon has a more negative effect.

In modern society, supply and demand for things with minor improvements constantly increase thanks to advertisement, but such items have imaginary benefits for people’s lives. First of all, consumer finds out about new products from advertisements, then he wants to purchase them due to marvelous presentation and orders unnecessary items on the marketplace. For example, the marketing video of devices for creating snowballs can be seen on TV during winter holidays, children ask their parents to buy them and use these goods instead of making snowballs by themselves, using devices for creating snowballs does not improve their lives. Secondly, advertising can make a person spend extra money. For instance, parents can purchase clothes for youngsters instead of buying that device and other stuff. Thus, marketing creates internet materials which tell us about useless products.

One says that after viewing ad we can order stuff which will be staying on shelf for long period. Firstly, advertising has attractive effect on the viewer. For example, labubu were popular in summer 2025 thanks to successful presentation, this year people prefer to spend money on other toys. Secondly, before watching videos people do not have the need to acquire items, they know about vital things without advertising. For instance, the knife does not need a show. Thus, aggressive marketing brings to people’s lives extra items.

To sum up, I believe that the drawbacks of advertising outweigh the positive sides. Marketing videos allow people to know about useless goods.
