Band 5+: Some people say that children should learn a foreign language when they are at kindergarten, but others feel that it is better for children to do this when they are teenagers. Discuss both of these views and give your own opinion.

The demand to study foreign language is found to contribute to the global village as it enables people to understand one another. However, some people argue that the child’s kindergarten age is the suitable time to introduce another language. On the other hand, others view is that, the perfect time is the transition between childhood and adulthood.

Looking at the kindergarten viewpoint, the reasons why some consider it as a beneficial approach this it the crucial stage where children acquire language skills. For instance, fluency of sounds and familiarity to phonics. For this reason, the repetitive approach is used to enhance their short- and long term memory. In addition, language development in early childhood is essential because it lays a foundation for skills later in life. For example, a child who studied a foreign language can use it socially to communicate they emotions and thoughts to their peers and teachers.

with regard to introducing foreign language to teenagers, proponents of this view argue that it would promote not only cognition but also emotional development , that is improving concentration , self-confidence and communication skills.

Taking everything into consideration, I support the former view because kindergarten children learn language easily through unconscious memory while teenagers may not learn fast because their conscious memory has fully developed. Moreover, children are can better extract hidden linguistic structures as compared to children who are 18 years and older.

In conclusion, learning a foreign language at a tender age provides an opportunity to achieve language proficiency as well as enhancing short -and long term memory.
