Opinions are divided on whether sports play a crucial role in society, with some people arguing that it is merely a form of entertainment. In my opinioin, sports contribute significantly to social development.
One might argue that sports are nothing more than a recreational activity designed for enjoyment.
This is because many people just use sports to relax or to escape from the pressure of daily life. This view sees sports as a hobby rather than a serious societal function. Another point is that professional sports are often commercialized. One reason is that athletes are given huge salaries and people treat these sports competitions as spectacles. As a result, sports today have become an entertainment industry instead of an activity that benefits the society.
These arguments notwithstanding, I believe that sports are an important part of social development. One big advantage is their positive impact on human health. Regularly participating in different competitions promotes healthy lifestyle by reducing the risk of obesity, heart disease and respiratory issues. Therefore, schools have physical education lessons on their curricula to improve and maintain overall health conditions of students. Another contribution is related to its power to unite society. Sporting events bring people together regardless of their background, nationality and social status. For example, international competitions such as the Olympics and World Cup encourage greater cooperation, which, in turn, results in mutual understanding between nations.
In conclusion, even though sports are seen as a form of entertainment, I personally feel that they are of great significance in society, improving public health and promoting unity within society.
