In today’s world, there is an ongoing debate about whether the key contributor to success is effort or innate talents. From my perspective, I believe that hard work is undeniably a necessary prerequisite for success; however, innate talent often plays an equally crucial role and shapes the entire process in a uniquely distinctive and irreplaceable way.
To begin with, there are several justifications for the primary role of personal exertion in achieving success. Admittedly, for the majority of people, exceptional talent is rare, and many are born into environments that are not ideal for recognizing or nurturing their abilities. Within this context, personal effort is the only factor that remains fully within an individual’s control. However, the idea that ‘success is attainable solely through individual effort’ tends to be more motivational and widely disseminated than alternative narratives, largely because it celebrates individual agency and resonates with people’s desires for autonomy and self-determination. In fact, innate talent alone cannot yield significant achievements in the absence of sustained effort.
Nevertheless, the importance of innate talents in attaining achievements should be objectively examined. First and foremost, what truly distinguishes one individual’s accomplishments from those of others is not merely hard work or opportunity, but the unique ‘flavor’ that innate talent imparts, making each person’s success unmistakably their own. More interestingly, many of the world’s celebrated individuals, whose remarkable achievements have earned widespread recognition, are often regarded as the perfect embodiment of both innate talent and relentless effort. For example, Lionel Messi exemplifies how natural ball-handling ability can be amplified through years of disciplined training. His long-term consistency demonstrates that natural talent only reaches its full potential when paired with relentless effort.
All things considered, I strongly support the view that hard work plays the central role in shaping an individual’s success while the defining characteristic of innate genius should not be underestimated. More importantly, regardless of how exceptionally talented a person is, individual success and personal aspirations can only be accomplished through persistent effort.
