It is argued that adults should learn practical skills on their own, while other people think that it is more effective for them to learn from a teacher in a classroom. From my own perspective, I subscribe to the latter school of thought because of some main reasons. In this essay, I will discuss both opinions and present my own view.
On the one hand, self-practicing skills can be beneficial in many cases. The first advantage is time flexibility. This is mainly because adults are always busy with a ton of workforce and childcare, which might take them various of time to handle. Self-directed learning allows them to arrange their study time flexibly and actively without feeling a sense of restriction. Moreover, practicing skills by themselves can help them develop other useful skills at the same time, such as self-independance or time management.
However, self-studying might be harmful since it results in the lack of direction. With the right guidance from the previous experienced generation, people would avoid information overload when they need to look up to some documents online or be even able to dive into a wide range of verified sources of datas. Additionally, a teacher can also provide individuals with immediate feedbacks whenever learners make mistakes or be confused. These feedbacks are significantly important for them to make progress quickly every single day. Besides, attending a formal course can create an interactive environment between teacher and students. This environment brings adults a lot of peer motivation and support, avoiding giving up or feeling a sense of loneliness during their studying.
For these aforementioned reasons, I arrive at the conclusion that although self-learning has many positive impact on gaining practical skills, people need the right teacher to direct them and help them during their journeys.
