Animal testing has long been a complex and controversial topic. While some people argue that on animals is unethical and should be totally prohibited, others believe that is necessary for scientific and medical development. This essay will discuss both points of view in question, before explaining the reasons that I believe animal testing should be implemented following specifics regulations.
The people who oppose animal testing, defend that animals are living creatures capable of feeling pain and suffering like humans. For this reason, using them as “guinea pigs” in laboratories or installations accredited to contribute to the purpose of research and study, is considered morally unacceptable. Many experiences expose animals to toxic substances, diseases, chirurgic procedures. Critics also argue that humans don’t have right to sacrifice and explore the life animal for own benefits. Furthermore, some individuals believe that technologic evolution can substitute this experiments, making it unnecessary in same cases.
On the other hand, supporters of research with animals have been demonstrated their contribution to medical progress. Many treatments and vaccines that save lives were developed using animal tests before being tested on humans. For example, the involvement animals have a crucial contribute in some development treatments or cures, such diabetes, cancer and polio. Unfortunately without animal testing, scientists and specialists could have difficulties to prove and give to population safety and efficacy about medicines that they are developing, potentially putting human lives at risk. From this perspective, the benefits to society have more weight than the disadvantages, especially when the objective is to improve public heath.
In my opinion, a complete prohibition of animal experiences would be disadvantage, because it can delay important research processes of medicine. However, animal testing should only be used in circumstances of extreme necessity and when there exist no adequate alternatives. Governments and research institutions need to apply rigorous ethical principles to reduce animal suffering and verify that experiments are justified.
In conclusion, although many people believe that animal testing is cruel and should be banned, others consider it essential to medical area. In my opinion, I believe that animals investigation when correctly regulated it’s necessary, protecting animal welfare and minimize action.
