In this digital era, technology has become an essential part of education. It is often argued that using tablets and computers may help children study more effectively and understand complex concepts more easily. Personally, I partly agree with this view, as using digital devices may bring several merits;however, it can also cause some demerits that should be considered.
On the one hand, there are several clear benefits of using technology while studying in class. One significant advantage is that it may make learning more interactive and enjoyable. This is because students can use some educational apps, videos, and games in class, allowing them to grasp complex topics and stay motivated during lessons. For example, chemistry or geography topics can be visualized through animations and virtual experiments which makes learning more effecient and memorable than relying solely on textbooks. Another major merit is convenience. Unlike conventional classes, students do not have to use books while studying as teachers can present their lessons on the screen instead of using boards and chalks. Hence, it can mitigate both teachers and students’ health issues and make study more conveniently and effortlessly compared with traditional lessons.
However, relying too heavily on digital devices at school can lead to several drawbacks. First and foremost, if students use technology excessively, it might limit opportunities for young people to engage in face-to-face communication, develop empathy, and collaborate effectively with peers. In other words, these skills are incredibly crucial not only for academic achievement but also for personal growth and social development. As a consequence, students may have the limitation of interaction while studying and reduce the chances to develop their teamwork skills. Second, children may lose concentration in class because tablets and computers can give them access to games, videos, or websites that are not related to learning. Consequently, they may not pay fully attention to their lessons so they may miss some parts of the lessons, which can make it harder for them to understand the material and make progress in school.
To sum up, while I accept that using digital devices is beneficial for students, I also believe that it also causes considerable drawbacks for children. Thus, a balanced approach would be the most appropriate solution to acquire better academic performance at school.
