Some people believe that widening our roads is the solution to problems on the road like traffic congestion. While I think the construction of larger roads can help in some aspects, I still believe that there are some better alternatives for the same problem, such as public transportation.
Firstly, bigger roads can reduce traffic jams. When an accident happens on a highway and the car involved is unable to move without assistance, that can cause a blockade on the road, narrowing it down and slowing the movement of vehicles. Therefore, by expanding the size of roads, people do not have to be halted since they can use a different lane. Also, creating more space for people to drive lowers the risk of collision with other drivers, thus eliminating the risk of traffic congestion in the first place.
However, I think that implementing public transport is a more effective solution to this problem.
Creating more opportunities for people to use buses and trains rather than vehicles on the road frees space from the road. So, by doing so there will be a smaller number of vehicles for accidents, a major contributor to traffic jams. In addition, when accidents do happen, people can switch to a different option, further contributing to solving this problem.
In conclusion, I believe that to put a stop to problems in the traffic, namely congestion via accidents, building larger roads can work as a solution by lowering the chances of crashing and relieving the toll it has on other drivers. I also think that materializing a public transport system can do a similar job, by moving people away from the road and providing an alternative to travelling than roads.
