Band 7+: Some people think that criminal behavior can have genetic reasons, while others believe that only circumstances can lead some people to crime. Discuss both views and state your opinion

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is argued in the statement that a number of people believe that the actions of criminals are provoked by genetic factors, whereas many others assume that certain events contribute to criminality. Below, both arguments are further explained and my personal opinion outlined.

To begin with, it is thought that DNA plays an important role in expressing such behavior. Children whose parents are engaged in illegal activities, such as crime, drug or sexual abuse have more possibilities to express their inherited genes in a criminal way. Also, it is a fact that a mother has a direct connection with the womb and therefore, any prohibited or lawbreaking action taken, has a straightforward influence on the baby by the neurotransmitters, hormones and substances. Thus, genes are responsible for the development of criminal tendencies of a person, his character and behavior.

On the contrary, the surroundings and the way of living of a person can trigger criminal actions. Precisely, due to the increased rate of poverty nowadays, young people turn to easy money making activities, such as drug use and gambling which accompanies danger and crime. Moreover, jealousy, lack of faith and egoism between partners, friends and family can lead someone to commit a felony for their own interest and growth. Therefore, the environment can affect one’s mind and become a criminal.

To sum up, I strongly believe that even though genetics can shape someone’s behavior and character, environmental factors and the way of living have a stronger impact on a person. Consequently, a criminal is influenced by certain circumstances, by other peoples’ actions or the evoked feelings.
