The debate over drug testing on animals remains controversial. While some people consider it crucial for scientific and medical breakthroughs, others believe that it is unethical and inhumane. In this essay, I will discuss both arguments and elaborate on my personal stance on the matter.
On the one hand, the proponents of animal testing claim that it plays a huge role in medical advancements. For instance, many lifesaving treatments, such as vaccines and antibiotics, have been developed through studies conducted on animals. Since animal physiology is similar to that of humans, the scientists could predict the effects on humans beforehand and avoid harmful side effects. Furthermore, regulatory institutions in many countries require animal testing before human trials which ensures the people’s safety.
On the other hand, another group of people, including me, has a completely opposing standpoint. From our perspective, drug testing on animals is cruel and outdated. Most animals used in experiments experience suffering, pain, and even death, which raises ethical concerns. Moreover, animal testing is not always reliable as proponents claim; drugs that worked on animals may not prove effective on humans. Advancements in technology, such as computer simulations and lab-grown human cells, offer better methods of testing that can be more accurate and effective.
In conclusion, while both viewpoints present legitimate arguments when examined from different angles, I firmly believe that given those developments, animal testing should be replaced with modern technologies
