Nowadays, workplaces have their own norms and policies including clothing regulation which is one of them. While some say there should be a strict dress code, I personally believe employees’ clothing choice should be a free will.
One of the reasons why staff of companies should wear whatever they want is individual expression. Employees’ clothing reflects their own personal style, characteristics and values which promote their sense of individuality and creativity. If employers create an inclusive environment which respects workers’ values and choices, it will positively affect their productivity and quality of work. For example, when I was working at the Endorphin advertising agency, the chief executive director was promoting an independence of employees’ working schedule, styles, and ideas. As a result employees were more enthusiastic, motivated and hard-working. This was just one of the benefits of allowing free dressing on workplaces.
Apart from the benefits of individual dressing mentioned above, focus on performance is also an issue employees should consider. I argue that in companies, the main concern should be employees’ competency, professional skills and work performance rather than their dress choice. For example, in many companies such as Amazon, McKinsey & Company, and Google, the executives focus on workers’ personal development, career plan and productivity rather than their clothing. As a result, these companies are one of the successful, renowned and competent companies with a great work ethic because of their norms and main concerns.
In summary, employees’ own styles reflect their personas and values which allow them to increase their creativity and work performance.
