Band 7+: Some people think that increasing communication usage of computers and mobile phones by young people had a negative effect on their reading and writing skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The widespread use of smartphones and computers for communication has led to detrimental impacts on young people’s reading and writing skills. I completely agree that this trend is disadvantageous to these skillset, and in this essay, I will provide evidence that supports my point of view.

The decline in traditional reading habits is one of the most prominent consequences. With the growing popularity of social media, instant messaging, and other digital platforms, young individuals are increasingly drawn to reading short and informal texts. This has resulted in fewer people reading books, newspapers, and magazines, which were once considered essential reading materials. Furthermore, the reduced attention span caused by constant exposure to digital media has made sustained reading challenging for young people, which is a crucial aspect of developing healthy reading habits.

Technology has not only affected users’ reading skills but also writing habits. The growing dependence on software for communication has contributed to a rise in informal writing styles. As a matter of fact, today’s youth tend to overuse emojis, acronyms, and abbreviations in their language, which can hinder the development of professional writing skills. Furthermore, young people’s reliance on autocorrect and other digital assistance plugins has simplified the writing process, which allows them to overlook grammatical and spelling errors. This, in turn, ultimately results in a lack of attention to detail and a deterioration in writing proficiency. What is more, since these tools are generally used for informal communication, the availability of instant messaging and other online communications platforms has discouraged young individuals from acquiring formal writing skills.

To summarize, the rising use of computers and mobile phones for communication has resulted in the decline of traditional reading habits and hindered the development of formal writing proficiency in young individuals.
