Environmental pollution has emerged as one of the most pressing issues of contemporary discourse, attracting attention from both scientists and the general public. A segment of society contends that the onus of protecting the environment lies primarily with government entities, while others assert that it is the responsibility of individual citizens. This essay will explore both viewpoints before presenting my perspective.
To begin with, it is crucial for government authorities to establish effective waste management and garbage collection systems. By doing so, they can efficiently manage a substantial volume of waste generated daily. Additionally, governmental bodies should implement policies to prohibit the use of harmful pesticides and chemicals, which are detrimental not only to the environment but also to avian species and beneficial insects crucial for agriculture. For instance, promoting the use of natural fertilizers could lead to the cultivation of high-quality fruits and vegetables, thereby mitigating health issues among the populace and fostering a healthier society.
Conversely, it is imperative for every individual to assume responsibility for maintaining hygiene in both private and public spaces. A recent survey conducted by students at the University of Columbia revealed that a significant quantity of plastic waste poses a severe threat to marine life. To address this concern, it is essential to educate the community through awareness campaigns in public spaces, encouraging adherence to regulations in parks, water bodies, and roadways. Educational institutions play a pivotal role in this initiative by incorporating environmental education into their curricula. For example, Alappuzha, a prominent city in India, achieved the status of the cleanest city in Asia in 2020, largely due to the implementation of an effective waste management system, which was supported by community engagement.
In conclusion, the preservation of the environment necessitates a collaborative approach. In my opinion, even with a robust environmental protection infrastructure in place, if citizens fail to utilize these systems effectively, the ecosystem will continue to deteriorate. Thus, it is evident that both governmental authorities and individual members of society share an equal responsibility in this endeavor, ensuring that future generations inherit our natural resources in their purest form.
