Some argue that goods must be produced with a high durability, while others insist that it is more important to create goods with affordable price. My stance leans toward the latter. Durability is important to stop fast-fashion trend and it’s more cost-effective for consumers, yet cheaper products allow everyone to have the same access and they’re also possible to be durable.
On one hand, products that made to last as long as possible will break fast-fashion system that is currently ruling every industry. This fast-fashion trend is harmful for the environment because of the waste it generates. Furthermore, consumers find such products are more cost-effective in the long run, since consumers only need to purchase the products once and they will not need to purchase another for a long time. For instance, if we buy Nike shoes, we will not have to buy another pair for up to 3 years. However, these reasons are only relatable for people with a high economic background and cannot be applied to those with low income.
On the other hand, goods that are cheap create an inclusivity for everyone to purchase them. Not every individual has the money to spend on high quality things, they need to make do with the dollars they have.
Moreover, cheap products do not always mean they are not durable because in reality, durability depends on the owner. For example, people who buy shoes at a much cheaper price than the Nike ones can also wear them for a long time if they practice the right shoes-care. Therefore, it is more important to make products as cheap as possible.
In conclusion, the most important point is to make products cheap rather than durable. Although products with a high durability support environment sustainability and are cost-effective, cheaper products are way more accessible for everyone with diverse background and can be durable too depending on the owner.
