Many believe that highly competitive academic work poses problems for children, whilst others consider this the best environment for children to be nurtured because it encourages students to achieve their goals. In my opinion, this challenging trend can be detrimental to young learners and will cause them to develop mental illness in their later lives.

On the one hand, it is undeniable that a competitive environment should be created for young pupils to have a better learning experience. If the lessons imposed in the curriculum and school activities are not challenging enough, they will lose interest in learning, sabotaging their future achievements. Moreover, they will have difficulty keeping up with their peers who have been well-prepared since childhood—accordingly, syllabuses which will prepare them to thrive to their fullest need to be included.

On the other hand, many individuals think that today’s learning environment is way too competitive for young learners to handle, resulting in students dealing with depression and other mental illnesses such as anxiety and trauma, and I also share this belief. While children are loaded with responsibilities that exceed what they can bear, they will not be productive anymore. Additionally, they have to give up all of their pastimes to pave their academic journey in preparation for their future professions as the demand for the job is becoming so high.

In conclusion, it is considered by many that schools need to be competitive to encourage them to grasp their dreams and to live up to the expectations of their employers; however, it can also inflict mental health issues.
