There has been a debate going on for some time, some think that making the legal driving age higher is the best solution for road safety, however, others seem to believe that there is a better solution to the improvement of safety on the road. I personally stand with the argument which wants to increase the legal driving age.
On the one hand, people believe that the driving age should be higher because teenage drivers might be too irresponsible. By increasing the minimum age, less accidents might occur. For instance, research has shown that the human brain is not fully developed until we reach the age 25. With this in mind, the argument is that adolescents are more prone to do things on impulse, with them being peer pressured easily. They are also more likely to get into accidents because of the adrenaline felt when they earn their peers’ approval.
On the other hand, the other side of the argument states that improving the road is a better approach. Road accidents often occur when there are blind spots around the corner, or when the intersection is not built properly. Take rural streets in Cambodia as an example, a lot of accidents could be prevented if the infrastructure was better. Improving infrastructure might also lead to a boost in tourism.
In conclusion, while improving infrastructure might make the road safer, the better solution is to change the driving age, because adolescents are drawn to doing irresponsible things when it comes to driving.
