Band 6+: some people think that the government should provide unemployed people free mobile phones and free access to the internet to help them find jobs, to what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion ?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Access to technology, particularly mobile phones and the Internet, is of great paramountcy in today’s overcrowded job market. There exists a long-standing discourse on whether or not the government should offer these resources to the unemployed to aid their job search. Although each side of the argument presents its reasonable justifications, I vehemently align myself with the notion that this approach should not be implemented concerning the reasons mentioned below.

On the one hand, proponents of the free mobile phones and Internet highlight an array of benefits derived from this approach. The justification lies in the fact that this can empower unemployed individuals by providing necessary tools for their job hunting and communication. Most job applications or interviews happen primarily online, which create a digital divide in which those without access to such technology might be at significant disadvantages. Therefore, offering cost-free mobile phones and access to the Internet would enable the unemployed to seek jobs online, submit applications, or attend virtual interviews, thereby helping them to secure a position in the workplace. Above all, providing access to technology for those unable to afford also ensures that everyone has a fair chance in the competitive job market. However, this argument is not without its flaws concerning a plethora of unwanted outcomes interconnected with such initiative.

Apart from the aforementioned grounds, I firmly believe that offering technology to unemployed people may not be an efficient way to allocate public funds. This is because providing free phones and Internet on such a large scale potentially strains the government budgets. Instead, funds can be better allocated to other important fields, such as job training and education programs. Additionally, such an approach is also seemingly difficult to monitor and ensure appropriate since many might use it for non-job-related purposes.

In conclusion, while free mobile phones and Internet access is of great paramountcy when it comes to helping the unemployed to secure a profession, I whole-heartedly believe that such initiative would inevitably lead to budget constraints and misuse of the resources, denoting that it should not be implemented.
