Some people claim that media reserve the right to publish about personal information about people’s lives, mainly because it helps to attract many readers, while others argue that the reporting details should undergo strict supervision as it can hinder those individuals’ quality of life and privacy.
One major reason some people support writing about people’s private lives, especially celebrities, is primarily because newspaper agencies can increase their number of readers thereby earning more income through advertisements. Celebrities such as sportspeople, actors, and politicians have a huge fanbase; therefore, by posting about their personal details, these media provide content specific to particual niches. At the same time, most people are willing to know updates about their preferred public figure, which is commonly called as gossips. As a result, in order to boost sales and increase revenue through advertisements, print media tend to post more about celebrities and other people’s lives.
On the other hand, opponents suggest that private details should be strictly controlled before being disseminated in order for them to have normal lives with privacy. Advocates of this view assert that fans or readers should enjoy and follow whatever they are famous for rather than focusing on their personal lives. Moreover, by publishing unregulated content, there is a higher probability for people to know explicit details such as dating partners, place of residence, or schools of their children, which can affect regular lives of such famous figures. This is particularly true for fans who will be near their celebrities’ homes in order to take autographs or photos, disrupting their privacy. Thus, certain personal details should be censored so that people such as celebrities can live a peaceful life.
In conclusion, some people assume that by posting about people’s personal lives, newspaper media can gain more attention by the public as a considerable number of people are interested in knowing such details. Critics, however, argue that these information should be strictly monitored and personal details such as children’s schools and place of residence should not be posted on mass media, protecting one’s own privacy and for the sake of their mental health.
