Getting a university degree has always been seen as a great achievement in one’s life throughout the history. It is because it is widely believed that a degree can lead one to a succesful life. This is partly true but there is also a controversial belief which is the world has many successful and wealthy people without a college degree these days with the help of the developing technology.
Before the 20th century, the sources where we can gain our knowledge was limited. It was either the school or the library. So, it was hard to get educated without going to school or university. As a result, the job became scarce without holding a validated degree. And this is the reason a university degree had become a milestone in one’s career pathway.
Technology has become cutting-edge and learning new skills has been easier ever since everyone could have a portable mobile phone. With easy access to the internet, those who wants to be an expertise in a particular field no longer need to go the university. 4 years of college life is not a mandatory anymore. Plenty of learning resources can be found at the tip of the finger. It has become this easy. This way, anyone who wants a successful life can pave their own way by themselves.
However, there are stills some jobs that require a proper education and hands-on experience such as health care and STEM industries. Thus, a degree is still necessary for the individuals who want to work in these areas.
To conclude, having a degree is still an honorable goal in life since it opens a plethora of future career doors. But, it does not always cause one to end up with a successful life. Therefore, I believe that a university degree is important but not essential for everyone to live a good life.
