Band 7+: Some people think that too much parental pressure over children's academic performance has negative impacts on their development. Others think otherwise, saying that parental pressure can bring children more success at school. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

While some contend that academic pressure from parents hinder children’s development, others remain positive, believing in the role it plays in enhancing academic outcomes. This essay will analyze both viewpoints while advocating for healthy academic motivations from parents.

On the one hand, parental pressure can promote success at school for several reasons. Firstly, it instills discipline in children, facilitating effective study habits and improved academic outcomes. One example is parents who set clear rules and provide guidance, such as limiting distractions and establishing dedicated study hours, thus creating a more structured learning environments conducive to productivity. Secondly, the approach simplifies learning goals for children. Parental push can give learning a clear-eyed sense of purpose: to meet parents’ expectations. This external motivation drives consistent effort and a strong commitment to academic excellence.

On the other hand, excessive pressure can negatively affect children’s development. Firstly, it desensitizes children to hypercompetition, creating a cycle of inadequacy as children are constantly obliged to excel. This translates to multiple aspects of life, leading to a sense of non-fulfilment and distorted understanding of important values, such as the joy of genuine learning. Secondly, excessive pressure can render children more prone to burnout. When driven by a persistent fear of failure and disappointment, they may become emotionally and physically exhausted, ultimately losing motivation and interest in their studies.

In conclusion, while the discipline and clear motivations of parental pressure may boost children’s academic success, excessive pressure risks producing hypercompetitive and burntout children if unchecked. It is, therefore, essential for parents to balance their expectations with encouragement and emotional support to ensure their influence remains positive and constructive.
