Band 7+: Some people think that too much parental pressure over children's academic performance has negative impacts on their development. Others think otherwise, saying that parental pressure can bring children more success at school. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Opinions are divided on whether exams are an important part of educating students or if the excessive number of tests is unnecessary. I will discuss both views in my essay below.

On the one hand, it is true that tests are indeed an essential part of education. They help to measure a student’s understanding of the curriculum; therefore, teachers have the opportunity to address their weak areas and ultimately improve them. This leads to better results in classes, motivates students to study harder, and encourages them to take responsibility for their learning, which can significantly boost their confidence. For example, when children receive poor grades on an exam, they may feel desperate and disappointed in themselves. However, if they receive adequate support from teachers or family members, they can be lifted out of despair and become more motivated to achieve better results next time.

On the other hand, others argue that the number of tests needs to be reduced. Frequent testing can cause significant stress, leading to anxiety or other mental illness among students. Moreover, exams often focus on specific subjects, neglecting creative and critical thinking skills, as well as other important aspects of learning. This raises the concern that many students may underperform due to the pressure of timed conditions, which makes it more difficult for them to demonstrate their true abilities.

In conclusion, while I acknowledge the importance of tests in assessing students’ academic progress and preparing them for future challenges, I believe that an overemphasis on testing in education can be detrimental.
