Band 7+: some people think that young people can learn useful skills by playing electronic and computer games. Others argue that people who play electronic, and computer games are wasting their time. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

It is argued that playing games has beneficial impacts on young people since it provides helpful skills for gamers. However, some others say that engaging in games wastes their time. From my perspective, I am of the latter school of thought.

Admittedly, gamers may gain several useful skills through engaging in video games. To elaborate, in competitive games, players have to constantly think of strategies to win when playing, which can encourage problem-solving, teamwork or decision-making, thus coming in useful outside the gaming context. For example, puzzle games may stimulate gamers’ brains to progress the levels of game, thus leading to the development of critical thinking.

However, this line of reasoning is not sound for the potential dangers they can suffer from wasting time with frivolous activity, especially with children and teenagers. Initially, gaming is highly addictive to users since it gives scores, frequent rewards and new targets to make them feel like they are achieving something. For example, children tend to spend hours on end trying to progress through the levels of a game in a blind pursuit of achievement or getting a higher score than their friends out of a sense of competition. Such addiction entails negative effects on players, ranging from lack of sleep, eyesight degradation to problems at school since homework is sacrificed for a few hours on gaming consoles. Moreover, it may lead to a lack of social life skills and a sedentary life.

In conclusion, I am firmly convinced that although gamers can learn beneficial skills by playing games, however wasting time on it creates negative outcomes for some areas of life
