Band 8+: Some people think traditional games are better than modern games in helping children develop their abilities. To what extent do you agree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Many people believe that traditional games are more beneficial for children’s development than modern video games. They argue that conventional games help children grow in many ways, such as physically, socially, and mentally. I strongly agree with this view and will explain the reasons in the following paragraphs.

On one hand, modern video games are often praised for their ability to boost cognitive skills. For example, simulation games allow children to design their own virtual worlds, which can help spark creativity. Strategic video games also encourage kids to think quickly and solve problems, enhancing their critical thinking. However, these benefits come with serious drawbacks. Modern games are very engaging and can be addictive, which often leads children to spend too much time in front of screens. This extended screen time is linked to a sedentary lifestyle, resulting in health issues like obesity and poor posture. Moreover, excessive screen exposure can cause mental fatigue, reduce attention spans, and even lead to social isolation.

On the other hand, traditional games offer a more balanced approach to development. Games such as hide-and-seek, tag, or even puzzles encourage children to play outdoors, which improves physical fitness and coordination. These games also teach valuable social skills, such as teamwork, communication, and leadership, as children interact with one another in a dynamic setting. Additionally, activities like chess and building blocks challenge the mind in a hands-on way, improving concentration, logical thinking, and creativity without the risk of addiction. This well-rounded approach makes traditional games a healthier and more sustainable option for overall growth.

In conclusion, while modern video games can enhance certain mental abilities, their addictive nature and negative side effects often outweigh these benefits. Traditional games, in contrast, promote physical health, social interaction, and cognitive development in a more complete and balanced manner. Therefore, it is clear that conventional games play a more important role in supporting the overall development of children.
