Band 7+: Space exploration is a waste of money. Governments should focus more on addressing public problems instead. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Space exploration has been a controversial pursuit for years, and there is a view that spending money on exploring the universe is a waste of funds, with other public problems being neglected. I agree with this opinion because space exploration’s benefits are questionable and other urgent societal issues deserve more attention instead.

Space exploration’s impact has been contentious so far. First major efforts in researching space began in the 1950s, an era when the US and the USSR were competing in any human realm to outperform one another. Ever since that period, there may have been some positive elements of space exploration as a whole, but if we ask general public about space research’s direct impact on their lives, we may not get straightforward answers. In fact, billions of dollars have been invested in space exploration for the purpose of competing on a global level, with the space race motivating superpowers to boldly invest taxpayer money in this endeavor. In other words, space was originally explored for competition and pride, not for people’s benefit.

Billions of dollars that are being invested in space could prove useful in solving many terrestrial problems. The same countries that allocate money to space research are the ones who are plagued by numerous issues lately. The US, for example, is currently experiencing an increase in homelessness and crime, along with the lack of universal healthcare. India, another country to invest in space exploration, is known for a high percentage of poverty across the country. Both of these countries could rationally use their funds to solve problems that can change their citizens’ lives, whether it is done through creating employment opportunities or building schools and hospitals.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that space exploration is a waste of money. Its impact has been debatable thus far, meaning funds could be used more wisely to alleviate some of the societal issues that worsen people’s lives.
