Band 6+: Students in university should be specialized in one subject rather than to develop a wider range of many different subjects. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people argue that asking the college students to specialize in only one subject instead of taking a wide range of different subjects can limit the ability of students to think critically and cross-subjects, whereas some believe that a wide spectrum of subjects are not necessary for students who already determined their major. In my opinion, both sides got a point or two.

Apparently, if a student is to specialize in only the subject they major, more of their finite time can be allocated into the study in the particular field. They are able to dig deeper into topics worth researching about in the field and a shallow understanding in the subject can be avoided from the root level, benefitting the future studies of the students. Nonetheless, there may be students who are thrilled to try out courses about other subjects, and specializing in only one subject may not be what they would expect.

On the other hand, if a student is to be unspecialised, they can take sub-courses that offer a chance for them to develop their skills in other fields that interest them. They are also armed for any cross-subject projects and research they might be starting in future years of university. However, it is possible that some students may hold little interest in other subjects aside from the one they had chosen to major; in this case, other mandatory courses will certainly be a burden loaded onto them, and specialization may be a better choice for them.

In conclusion, as the individual differences in students in terms of preferences are inevitable and considering the side effects of both specializing and not specializing, I claim that all university students should be allowed to choose any subjects if they prefer to do so rather than being forced to stick to one sole subject because all students should have the right to choose what suits them the most.
