Band 5+: Students should continue their studies in universities or do some paid work immediately after senior secondary education. Do you agree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

These days students face a daunting choice between continuing their tertiary education and applying for a job shortly after school. Personally, I believe that university opens up greater prospects and the time spend on study is bound to be a worthy alternative.

To begin with, supporters of after-school work are haunted by the idea of earning a great deal without making an effort to broaden your knowledge by getting higher education. Although to some extend that sounds prudently, this option is oftentimes followed by limited career paths and a meager salary. That is to say that rarely do drop-out are hired for senior and leading positions without a degree. In consequence, a narrow job market is open to uneducated people.

This brings me to my second point. Despite the high extend of knowledge acquired throughout a several-year education period, it is considered to be insufficient and requires an on-the-job training. Therefore, most individuals take the view that coming through the studying is certain to allow them to gain practical skills and build their career rapidly. Nonetheless, not only does the university teaches us theoretical content, but it also makes us think logically and make informed decisions, which are essential capacities for any vacancy.

Thirdly, there is a common bias that only by delving into working process will a person get an understanding of a professional field. I can’t condone with this statement, as the tertiary education provides the advanced view of spheres a graduate can be engaged in. Networking with professors and groupmates is likely to become a prerequisite to identify the attraction job area and obtain prudent advice.

Taking everything mentioned above into account, I assume that years spent at the university can be considered as a reasonable investment in your future due to the abundance of valuable knowledge and career-orientated recommendations. However I can’t deny that a person is able to make a go of success without a degree.
