Band 7+: Studies have suggested that nowadays children watch much more television. What are the causes/solutions?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Several studies have shown that in today’s generation, screen time has significantly increased, with children frequently using televisions, tablets, and phones. This excessive screen time has a negative impact on children. In this essay, I will discuss the causes and potential solutions to this issue.

Children are natural attention seekers; they require a lot of attention from their family members at a young age. When they do not receive this attention, they often turn to other sources, such as television. Many parents today are often distracted by their phones, using social media, watching videos, and playing games. As a result, children’s attention is diverted. Parents frequently resort to putting their children in front of the television to watch cartoons or children’s rhymes, which makes the children habitual to it. Over time, kids may become stubborn and keep asking for more screen time. One solution to this problem is for parents to reduce their own screen time and engage more with their children through various activities and games.

The technological world offers numerous advancements, one of which is the introduction of LCD and LED televisions in multiple screen sizes. Today, many people prefer to have the largest screens possible in their homes. However, these large monitors can lead to physical and mental health issues for children, including problems with eyesight and mental distress from watching inappropriate shows, which may alter their behavior. As parents, we should regulate the time our children spend watching television and prioritize schedules that involve toys and outdoor activities to expose them to the world around them.

In conclusion, it is primarily the responsibility of parents to care for their children. Even when busy, parents can take the time to engage in play. If family members become more involved, children may find their interests drawn away from screens.
