Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 6+: • Task 2: In the past, people stored knowledge in books. Nowadays, people store knowledge on the internet. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In the past, various knowledge was stored in books. In recent times, technology has developed so, instead of books we can find more quick and easy knowledge on the Internet. Despite the challenges this brings to the present, the merits of putting data in storage online far outweigh the demerits.

To begin with, storing knowledge on the internet has some drawbacks. The internet offers a diverse array of information, but this diversity includes both reliable and unreliable sources. As a result, distinguishing between accurate information and misinformation can be a difficult and ongoing challenge. In addition, the sheer volume of content online often leads to information overload, where users are bombarded with so much data that it becomes hard to sift through and prioritise what is important. This can result in what is known as “information fatigue,” where users feel overwhelmed and struggle to process the vast amount of information available to them.

However, if the information we gain is recorded on the internet, it is unlikely to disappear in the long run. Additionally, storing knowledge through the internet makes access easy for people around the world which helps them to reach data whether they do not have books. For instance, some poor countries do not have written records, this is because citizens can not improve their knowledge but due to the development of the internet, they can access any information at any time. Furthermore, with the technology development, a litany of different forms catering to people, such as videos or podcasts can maximise the experience of the audience with more attractive animations and creative content that are easy to contemplate. For instance, while knowledge of history was traditionally documented in books, in this day and age, many YouTube channels or other social media platforms use advanced technology to vividly recreate these historical contexts, making them far more engaging and accessible.

In conclusion, I think those aforementioned disadvantages can be controlled with the help of the government and people themselves to put a limit on the usage of the Internet. On balance, I reckon that storing knowledge online would be given precedence over paper books owing to their numerous merits.
