Band 7+: Task 2: Some people think parents should supervise their children's activities closely, while others believe children should have more freedom. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, the debate over whether families should strictly put a cap on children’s activities has sparked considerable discussions. While some believe that this practice can offer safety and direction for teenagers, others argue that rigorous supervision can be a negative procedure for the child’s development. In this essay, both sides will be elucidated before any personal viewpoint is stated.

On the one hand, careful protective measures are associated with various benefits. Primarily, the safeguarding of parents can promote safety and protection from harmful objects. As children are increasingly exposed to a wide array of content, there are potential risks of them encountering malicious websites or misleading information. This requires high vigilance and awareness raised by families to deter promptly against phishing scams. Alongside this, monitoring children during their middle adolescence can decrease potential abuse. The maltreatment has alarmingly become so rampant in various schools that parents have to keep an eye on their offspring, regularly checking for abuse indicators and quickly handling them.

On the other hand, the two main reasons below can reinforce my conviction of allowing youngsters more freedom. The main reason for this belief is due to the attained life skills stem from real-life obstacles. Permitting young children to confront difficulties allows for more hands-on experience and much-needed skills such as time management, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. This plays a crucial role in personal gain and pushes individuals beyond limitations for further success. Secondly, empowerment for youngsters can foster independence. An autonomous lifestyle can allow for more authenticity, in which individuals can live according to who they truly are. Instead of having choices dictated by others, youngsters can live based on their values and interests. Furthermore, parental support for seeking personal goals and aspirations also facilitates self-esteem. Apart from parental guidance, children should be permitted to explore their passion and innate talents for fulfillment. This enhances self-direction and confidence in seeking further prosperous opportunities in life.

In conclusion, while the upsides correlated with keeping children under supervision are unquestionably justified, the positive impacts of giving more freedom on skills acquisition, independence, and confidence are far more compelling. It is advisable for families to seek the most appropriate approach to ensure the comprehensive development of children.
