Raising children has always been a topic of debate as ideologies vary and new opinions are always emerging. While some individuals believe that children deserve more freedom because they are human beings after all regardless of age, I lean more towards the opposing side, which argues that parents should supervise their children more for safety reasons.
On one hand, a group of people argue that parents owe their children a sense of freedom of choice. There are many reasons supporting this ideology. Most importantly, they believe that it helps in character development and in boosting their confidence. This can easily be observed when it comes to activities. For instance, when children are allowed to pick and perform the activities they enjoy without any parental influence, they tend to excel in them way quicker than if they were coerced to, which in turn uplifts their self-esteem.
On the other hand, parental supervision is urged by the other group for several justifications. The leading one being children’s safety. Because of their vulnerable age, they are easily influenced rendering them the favorited target. Especially recently with internet use becoming a popular activity for children. For example, the “Elsagate” controversy where children videos on YouTube were labelled “kids-friendly” but had tons of subliminal messages that were harmful, violent and absurd. For this reason, I agree that children’s activities should be closely monitored by parents.
To conclude, opinions tend to vary when it comes to whether children are owed more freedom or should be supervised by parents. I personally believe that even though, children’s freedom, especially when making decisions is crucial to one’s personal development, the world isn’t as safe as we think it is and children lack judgement hence parental monitoring is crucial.
