Opinions are divided on whether or not the optimum way to decrease the rate of juvenile crimes is to invest in educating parents regarding parental skills. While I advocate it is an effective way, I still believe that we should take in consideration the educating aspects of the school environment since it is able to contribute to the behaviors of adolescents.
Puberty are inclined to follow and take their parents as an example since they seem to rely on and believe in parents. Especially, when they are in adolescent stage, children tend to be more sensitive and separate themselves from their family. Educating parenting skills such as active listening or conflict resolutions, can help them have a deep understanding about some problems that children may face. For example, several families still believe that children are able to grow up by themselves if they let them experience and do whatever they want without controlling. As a result, some adults have to experience the feeling of isolation or depression due to parent’s ignorance. Ultimately, they are likely to show the behaviors of increased aggressiveness or irritability which accumulated over a long time.
A proper education environment should be considered as it can have some impacts on the development of children’s cognitive skills. The fact is that schools are a small society where adults can interact and be affected by other people. Making friends, for example, some studies pointed out that forming connections with people who have abusive tendencies can make children behave like them at home or with others. Whether or not parents are equipped with knowledge to support them, if schools are unable to teach or solve negative situations, the level of youth crime can not decrease.
In conclusion, equipping them with parental skills is a good idea because parents are the first important environment that children are accustomed with, so it is indeed crucial. However, the school’s environment is also imperative since it can form children’s behavior.
