We live in an age when tourism is blossoming, which made English one of the most spoken languages in the world. Many people believe, that eventually English will be the only language to exist. The following essay takes a look at the advantages and disadvantages to having only one language spoken globally.
The main benefit of having only one language is quite self-explanatory. The existing language barrier would dissappear, and everyone around the world could communicate with eachother. We could understand everything and everyone everywhere, which sounds unbelievable today, eventough technology offers many ways to help with this problem. I can’t imagine the impact this would have by making life significantly easier for everyone who is travelling, working or studying abroad. For example students could study on their own language anywhere in the world, and publications, books and all sorts of media contents would be available for anyone, which I think would have an impact on the economy as well. So is there any arguments against one global language?
Despite these advantages this would mean that every other language in the world would disappear. Language is known the be an important part of every culture’s history, and partly it defines who we are. Moreover English might not be the best language when it comes to expressing ourselves. For example it is said that hungarian language can express and explain things more nuanced with it’s comprehensive vocabulary.
Taking everything into consideration, it is beneficiary if people from all around the world can understand and communicate with each other, so generally it is good to have a global language, however we shouldn’t let other languages die.
