Band 7+: The environmental problems facing today’s world are so significant that few ordinary people can improve this situation. The government and large companies should reduce the amount of damage to the environment. Do you agree or disagree?

Generally speaking, environmental damage appears to be one of the most heated topics these days, since it leads to pollution of various kinds, global warming, species’ extinction and the like. Given the scale of said threats, I strongly believe that absolutely everyone should take care of the environment, starting from individual actions of ordinary people and ending with governmental or private companies’ initiatives.

First of all, one has to emphasize the fact that most environmental issues could be resolved without allocating millions from countries’ budgets. In other words, it seems to be enough for everyone to simply start with some baby steps but in the right direction. To illustrate, a regular person could develop a number of eco-friendly habits that would require very little effort; such practices as the reduction of plastic usage, energy conservation and the minimization of water consumption may very well be of assistance in dealing with eco-crises. Additionally, ordinary people can always persuade others and even encourage their entire communities to adopt some favourable ‘green’ habits, multiplying the positive effect.

However, the scale of environmental problems may be too considerable and therefore necessitate more comprehensive methods and more radical solutions. Governments and private companies could commence to promote environmental programs in all educational establishments, raising the awareness of ecological threats. Furthermore, possessing more power and possibilities in comparison with ordinary people, governments can create special departments that will control emissions, protect endangered species and natural habitats, for example, via imposing stricter ecological regulations. In addition, they can incorporate green technologies everywhere, such as the popularisation of electric cars instead of petrol-powered ones, the construction of buildings consuming electricity generated by sunlight, the instalment of more windmills and so and so forth. To reiterate, it is within their power and competence to promote the development of renewable energy sources.

To conclude, it seems obvious that the state of the environment lies in the hands of everyone. In fact, all individuals could make the difference, say by recycling and using less energy; still, the real power to make things better also lies in the hands of governments and large companies.
