With transformations in social forms and shifts in interpersonal relationships, it has become increasingly common to measure one’s personal traits based on the first impression. While some people argue that this is the most effective way to judge someone, I tend to think that it largely represents a negative development.
To begin with, one of the main reasons why this practice may bring negative repercussions is that nothing can be judged correctly at the first glance. There is a widespread saying, ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover.’ Based on this idea, it is important to recognize that first impressions can be deceiving. People often try to behave differently when meeting someone for the first time. As a result, relying on the initial encounter may not provide an accurate reflection of a person’s true character.
In addition to this, individuals possess a wide range of qualities and personal traits that cannot be understood in a brief interaction. This is because, in my opinion, it takes time to have a more precise assumption about an unfamiliar person. It is necessary to collect data from those who have an accurate viewpoint of a person or to spend more time with that person during the process in order to have a true judgment of someone.
To sum up, even though first impressions can provide some insights about a person, considering the main factors discussed above, it is crucial not to consider this practice as the sole basis for judging someone; instead, individuals can obtain more precise information over time.
