Ever since the industrial revolution, people have been exploiting fossil fuels such as coal, petrol, and natural gas; however, the availability of such fuels is dwindling rapidly, which are used up by cars. To divert the automobile industry’s heavy reliance on petrol, numerous car companies have developed fully functional electric cars which have both its benefits and drawbacks.
First and foremost, billions of automobiles currently rely solely on petroleum for fuel, which not only uses up a major proportion of the world’s remaining oil reserve, but also contributes to environmental pollution as well. Electric cars do not require any sort of fuel to run, as they contain batteries. Fossil fuels are nonrenewable and will eventually diminish in amount. An increase in the promotion and use of electric vehicles aids in the preservation of our over-exploited fossil fuels.
Moreover, switching to electric cars does not release any harmful by-products into the environment. Ordinary car engines are prone to releasing enormous amounts of smog and air-pollutants into the atmosphere. Toxic gasses such as carbon monoxide and methane are often produced which is linked to the potential development of lung cancer and other chronic diseases . Furthermore, methane is also dubbed as a “greenhouse gas” which entraps radiation from the sun, causing global temperatures to rise. If a greater number of people opt for electric vehicles, this would significantly reduce the amount of air pollution and lung related health problems.
However, on the other hand, the increasing use of electric cars has its own handful of problems as well. Electric cars require batteries which require replacement and maintenance from time to time. This may deter some people from purchasing electric vehicles since car maintenance fees are often exorbitantly priced. Additionally, electric cars need to be charged on a daily or weekly basis. This can cause an annoyance to customers who need to search for charging stations when they are commuting. Lastly, since electric automobiles are relatively new to the market, their properties and functioning details are still widely unknown. There is a growing paranoia across the world regarding the safety and reliability of electric cars. This was further exacerbated by a series of explosions and ignitions caused by electric cars at an electric automobile plant in China earlier this year.
In conclusion, just like everything else, electric cars both have their pros and cons. To some, the advantages may outweigh the disadvantages, while others may stick to using petrol-run automobiles. Electric cars are clean and eco-friendly, while at the same time, they may be potentially detrimental and costly.
